Symposia

A Symposium is an event hosted by a CIGRE National Committee and organized by CIGRE, with the objective of examining a particular topic within the field covered by CIGRE. The Symposia are held by the Central Office since 1983.

Usual practice is for two Symposia to be organized in odd number years, to avoid coincidence with the year of the Session, and in a country other than France, which is the host country for the Session. One Symposium is held in spring (usually in April or May), and the other in autumn (usually in September or October). The exceptions are the Symposia organized in cooperation with other international organizations or as regular events of a National Committee.

The initiative of a Symposium comes jointly from a National Committee offering to host the event on a subject of interest for the Industry in the country, and a Study Committee which proposes a technical program. The Symposium should coincide with the annual meeting of the Study Committee(s) involved, except for a serious impediment for any one Study Committee. Depending upon the nature and the limits of the subject chosen, the technical programme can either be drawn up by one Study Committee alone or by a leading Study Committee in collaboration with other Study Committees. It may also involve international organizations working in the adjoining fields.

The announcement of a Symposium is sent by a National Committee and s Study Committee to the Technical Committee and the Secretary General for a review and approval. The decision on organizing the Symposium is taken by the Administrative Council upon the recommendation of the Technical Committee.
